Details

The Oakengates Theatre opened in 1968 in the shell of the former Town Hall Assembly Hall. The two-storey building is constructed mainly in red brick with bands of corrugated metal on the façe down to the first floor entrance. The small foyer with box office leads up to the first floor bar and the theatre itself. The main auditorium is flat-floored with bleacher seating at the rear. The side walls are simple, with wooden beams and acoustic panels. A lift in front of the stage connects with the get-in, but also doubles as orchestra pit or forestage. The stage itself is flat with limited flying. Backstage there are four dressing rooms, green room and band room. In 2001 the supermarket next to the theatre was purchased as the Oakengates Regeneration Partnership planned an expansion of the theatre facilities and services as a boost to the local economy. Building works started in 2004 and were completed in July 2005. The new venue now offers, alongside its 650 seat auditorium, hall space for events and hire, library, children's centre, gallery, meeting rooms, cafe and more, now available throughout the day, and not just during performance hours.
