Details
The Questors was formed in 1929 and moved to this site in 1933. A Studio Theatre opened in 1960, the current Playhouse opening in 1964 with rehearsal rooms and other parts of the venue being commissioned as they were completed. This is a fully adaptable theatre with many configurations including proscenium, thrust and in-the-round with limited flying facilities and a small orchestra pit. Probably the finest theatre built by amateurs, members stage around 20 productions each season, and also let to professional companies who present a limited season of 'bought in' work during the year. The auditorium is shell shaped (i.e. a raked horseshoe) with the majority of the seating fixed apart from an area of stalls seating which is not fixed. Behind this area is a horseshoe shaped gangway which provides access to the fixed seating. The well-sized bar is used by theatregoers and club members, situated in an adjoining house. There are three full-size rehearsal rooms, and the Studio Theatre is a fully flexible black box.
