Details

The idea for a 'creative enterprise centre' was first floated in 1995, conceived as part of a continuing regeneration of the town. Galeri Caernarfon finally opened in 2005. It includes a 400 seat theatre, two large rehearsal studios, art spaces, a cafénd a number of other facilities. Externally it is a long, three storey rectilinear structure, comprising three tightly linked, parallel sheds. It has a visible steel frame and green oak boarded facing, giving it a pleasing semi-industrial character well-suited to its dockside location. The inner shed has a theatre at the east end and rehearsal rooms at the west end, with a foyer between. The interior spaces have an elegance derived from simple geometry, rather than decoration. The theatre, which doubles as a cinema, is a warm rectangular space with straight-rowed, single rake seating, with narrow side slips from the upper level. Generously proportioned end stage.
