Details
A prominent building, set back from the road, built 1887-89 by John Norton of London costing £6,000 on a site donated by Howel Gwyn. Gothic, 2 storey in 7 bays of snecked masonry with ashlar dressings. Steeply pitched slate roof with gables. Plain eaves band. Stair turrets to outer bays. Left hand turret rises to eaves with tall pyramidal roof. Right hand turret is gabled. Unsympathetic modern gallery added. Arcade formerly with glazed roof, at ground floor. Sympathetic modern additions to rear elevation. The Hall was destroyed by fire in October 2007 while undergoing a major £4m refurbishment. Neath Port Talbot Council has remained committed to reopening the theatre and, following a feasibility study in 2008, is proceeding with new designs which will retain as much of the original detail of the building as possible, while providing a state-of-the-art community arts facility.
