Details

Built as Miner’s Public Hall and Institute - a type common in South Wales (e.g. Mountain Ash, New Theatre), but more of a landmark than most. Institute on ground floor with auditorium above. Fully equipped stage - 6.4m (21ft) proscenium, 8.5m (28ft) depth and 11.9m (39ft) grid. Shallow balcony on three sides. Altered on conversion to cinema in 1930s. Impressive, five-storeyed, red brick façe surmounted by Flemish gable above a big mullioned and transomed arched window. The ground floor has three large, arched and pedimented entrance doors. Small fly tower projecting above main roof.
