Details

Built on the site of the wooden Gaiety Theatre, which burnt down in 1888, the Grand was brick-faced with stone dressings; two storeys with taller entrance block on corner with three similarly treated faces crowned by a parapet with scrolly pediments broken by portrait busts in pedimented frames. The auditorium had three balconies with rather flat box fronts, a little less elaborately enriched than usual for Matcham but with draped figures in niches either side of proscenium at dress circle level. The Grand switched to films in 1925 but reopened as a theatre in 1940. It closed in 1956 when there was a major fall of ornamental plaster from the ceiling with, fortunately, no audience present. It was demolished in 1959 but the site remains vacant with part of the rear wall of the stage still visible (2004).
