Details

Fifteenth century tithe barn converted to theatre c.1929 by George Pitt-Rivers. Ashlar and cob, with two entrances with sconces at side. Gable-ended tiled roof. Appearance is that of a long flat-floored hall with square proscenium stage with small apron. Later roof of collar-braced trusses on vertical wall posts supported on corbels. Family portraits line walls and large stone fireplace with stone panels, in keeping with early appearance of the building, has been inserted half-way down hall. Seating on loose stacking chairs. Low grid, with curtains, etc hand-drawn. Also used for political rallies and union meetings - Sir Oswald Mosley once addressed audiences here. Now serves mainly local theatricals, concerts, meetings and, latterly, weddings and parties.
