Details
An amateur theatre presenting one play a month. The building was formerly a bakery approached through a yard and has the modest appearance of a cluster of out buildings with no architectural pretension whatever. Road widenings have made it clearly visible from Tweedy Road and Bromley North Station and it could now well be given just a little more in the way of architectural presence. Only an amateur theatre with dedicated support could have been successful for so long with the difficulties this one labours under. Roof, brickwork and floors are all in need of repair or replacement. The public entrance and the stage door are both at first floor level, approached by steep staircases, the auditorium has strained sightlines, the crossover has extremely low headroom, the lighting operator has an oblique view of the stage and the sound operator cannot see it at all! The company receives no grant of any kind but the extent of the refurbishment now needed will only be achieved with a substantial capital subvention. Proposals were put forward in 1998 aimed at providing significant improvements whilst maintaining an informal character. The Little Theatre provides a useful, simple playhouse, to complement the larger, more sophisticated professional Churchill Theatre.
