Details
An entry is needed for this building (which was included in the 1982 Curtains) simply to establish it was not the Totnes Theatre. Despite strong local tradition and the presence of grotesque masks (‘folkloric’ rather than dramatic) on the window keystones, the room at the rear, described as ‘hall’ by 1962, seems never to have had a theatrical use. It may possibly have served at some time as a cinema attached to an eighteenth century house and shop premises. The Totnes Playhouse, which is known to have been active by 1806, was in fact at the rear of the present No 6 The Plains. It closed in 1836 and was burnt down in 1860. Another one opened at the rear of the Royal Seven Stars Hotel and was active in the 1850s. Some evidence of this room survives. The Lion Inn which had a theatre c.1863-85 was at the other end of town.
