Details
A small theatre built about 1901 within the complex of a psychiatric hospital and probably contemporary with the adjoining Lodge House. The theatre can also be approached via a glazed walkway of similar date, from the stage left side of the building. Internally a flat floored ballroom auditorium, with oval leaded lights at high level depicting various flowers. The stage left side of the auditorium is equipped with a small bow fronted box or minstrels' gallery at high level. The main entrance to the auditorium is on the stage right side and has a mahogany surround with a scrolly broken pediment. The rectangular proscenium with scroll-bracketed upper corners is flanked on each side by mahogany pilasters, part fluted and cabled, which are repeated around the auditorium, dividing the walls into panelled bays. The ceiling is divided into ribbed panels, rising from the deep cove over the cornice. The stage has primitive fly floors and a small timber grid. Proscenium height is approx 3.65m (12ft). Externally the theatre is built of sandstone, and the simple pitched roof is of small red tiles. The dominant Lodge House elevation is divided into three bays, the central one surmounted by a large lead clad and timber clock tower crowned by an open cupola. The windows in all three bays are mullioned, the whole presenting an imposing presence in the grounds. The auditorium of the theatre is fitted externally with a leaded ventilator, surmounted with a dome which matches that of the clock tower.
