Details
A vast cinéariety venue with full stage facilities - one of several built for the proprietors of the city centre Metropole Theatre of Varieties (demolished). Located in a densely populated working class area in the East End, the Granada had a white stucco entrance portico with a pediment and fin-shaped name pylon in the form of a skyscraper with flanking poster hoardings, now truncated and re-clad in corrugated metal sheeting. The auditorium was some way behind and of brick with corrugated roofing. Lofty foyers with polychromatic mosaic and terrazzo flooring led to a cavernous auditorium with one straight cantilevered balcony. The decor was a riot of sunbursts, waves and zig-zags, with the plenum grilles modelled on skyscrapers, made from layered plasterboard. Dark since 1995, its condition deteriorated until demolition in 2001.
