Details

Only the remarkable tenement block containing the main entrance and fragments of one side wall survived the demolition in 1932 of Cullen’s massive enterprise. The designer of a clutch of sadly long-lost theatres, he was a leading exponent of Art Nouveau and the Grand’s façe is typically enigmatic. It is consists of four storeys in sandstone with arched windows at first floor, rising to tall bay windows at either end. The centre bays consist of broad chimney breasts with fanlights and slender pilasters between. The bay containing the main theatre entrance was to the right, culminating in a dome carried on a drum of columns containing a lantern with flanking pinnacles. The building makes an interesting landmark and the old theatre entrance now leads to the caféf the ABC cinema which replaced it in 1934.
