Details
Built 1896, by E Edmondson and Son of Highbury as a public hall with an orchestra at one end and a proscenium stage at opposite end, the whole open on one side to a huge supper room. Converted (perhaps before completion) to opera house with theatrical auditorium, balcony and boxes by Frank Matcham. Adapted to cinema use about 1915, with alterations over the years. Severely damaged in World War II and never reopened. The Matcham façe has been replaced by a plain commercial infill building. All that remains is part of the backstage structure, a brick building of no visual interest, now used for storage.
