Details

Typical early/mid nineteenth century East End pub, one of the few old buildings now left standing in Leman Street, close to the site of the old Garrick Theatre, the Brunswick Theatre and Wilton's. It had a music and dancing Licence in 1836, which was refused in 1866. Few mid nineteenth century rooms of even this simple order now survive with a well-authenticated entertainment tradition. At one time this provided a venue for 'Vanity' players; professionals were probably entirely local. It is not clear whether it ever had a separate auditorium - probably not. A large upstairs front room (now divided) was probably adapted for theatrical/musical entertainment of a low order. A pleasant enough façe, but the room is so nearly featureless as to be of no architectural significance.
