Details

The Savoy opened with a policy of cine-variety. Although planned originally as a variety house, the stage was shallow and there was no fly tower, and so, with an opening in 1939, it must be assumed that plans could not be totally fulfilled. Handsome brick façe in Classical style with stone dressings. Three major bays, the outer ones, housing exits, plain with entablature, middle bay with central entrance comprising three double doors, canopy over, and above, three round-headed windows between engaged Ionic columns, all rising to a full entablature and parapet with balustrade over the centre bay. The large foyer had a central staircase leading to circle and café The auditorium, seating 2252, was lit from a large central lay-light fitting and from a series of large side lights from the flat ceiling, which had an ornamental cornice. The side walls, at upper level, have a series of ornamental arched recesses which were originally hung with festoon curtains, and a decorative organ grille at either side of the square proscenium which was lit with cove lighting. The Compton organ was removed in 1968, and today the ceiling is obscured by a suspended ceiling, with only the decoration from below the recesses visible. Closed in 1967, the building has been well-maintained as a bingo social club, first under Ladbrokes, and now as a Gala club.
