Details

The first purpose built theatre to be completed in Central London since the Royal National Theatre was completed a decade previously. It opened on a site shared with a library. Extremely well designed it is possible to convert the main house from a proscenium arch to a thrust stage or flat floor within three hours. A brick built exterior envelopes an auditorium which is largely plain but has retractable seating at stalls level with fixed seats in the balcony. There is an orchestra pit of unusually large proportions 10m x 6m which can also be used as a flat floor. Dressing rooms are provided for 65 performers.
