Details
The Arts Centre was built on University land to provide theatre for the community and the students. The Theatr y Werin was an integral part of the Arts Centre and had no external expression; it proved very successful but limited and a decision was taken to upgrade the theatre, to improve facilities, and particularly access for the disabled. It was also seen as necessary to develop the community arts provision with specific spaces, especially for dance, drama, music, film and visual arts. The result is a splendid RIBA award-winning building - a £4.3 million building programme achieved with minimum interruption to the centre's programming. The Theatr y Werin is a flexible auditorium with proscenium arch and thrust, equipped with a grid - 22 counterweight double purchase sets - a trap and an orchestra pit. It is housed within a soft, circular building using organic architectural forms.
