Details

The building contains two spaces, the Elliott Hall, essentially a concert hall, and the Travellers Studio Theatre. It was originally the laundry of the Royal Commercial Travellers School, built in 1906. The concert hall has an occasional stage plays licence. The Travellers Studio is very narrow relative to its length. There is no ceiling and the roof is full of an elaborate ventilation system. Flat floor, stepped at the rear. Portable staging, usable in a variety of configurations with an acting area of 7.3m by 18.8m. It has a technical control room and modern lighting and sound. Limited capacity throws doubt on its financial viability for both professional and amateur drama. Separate from this building, but interconnecting, is the bar and the dressing rooms with shower and toilet. Plans have been discussed for a 300 seat theatre on adjacent spare land, using the old laundry building for circulation and exhibition space. The adjacent former boiler house would become the scene dock and paint frame, its chimney demolished.
