Details
The site was formerly occupied by the Town Hall Tavern, which had a music hall attached. In 1898 it was rebuilt and reopened as the Palace of Varieties. No description of the interior has yet been located. Externally the 1898 building was busily detailed in brick with stone dressings, three storeys with dormers above. It had a broad, pedimented entrance elevation with boldly arched opening at first floor level; a round corner tower rose in two stages above the parapet, with dome, open lantern and gadrooned cupola.
