Details

A long disused theatre or variety hall of which little is known. It is free-standing on back land, behind the frontage buildings on the corner of High Street and Mill Lane. It existed before 1912 and probably became a cinema. It had ceased to be recorded as either cinema or theatre by 1947. The building is in poor condition and not readily accessible, but a restricted view obtained of the interior shows that it still has a proscenium arch and some stencilled and figurative painting of unknown date on the walls. Much subdivided internally. There was probably a courtyard entrance from Mill Lane, but this has been blocked by the subsequent building of public lavatories and a temporary structure used as a shop. This appears to be Walton’s only purpose-built theatre, but it cannot be regarded as a promising candidate for revival.
