Details

Junction is an arts and civic centre, providing cultural and civic facilities for the town of Goole. Replacing a 1980s extension to the Victorian Market Hall, the architects used the foundations and steel frame - for sustainable reasons and to reduce costs of the new building, and to maintain a sense of continuity in the townscape by using the existing familiar shape of the market extension and developing it into something new. Externally the building is of charcoal grey cement panels above a canopy of gold stainless steel. At ground level the walls are spruce panels with bright strip lighting, with the timber mullions continuing their rhythm around the glazed caféar. At dusk the lighting beneath the canopy and the activity within the caféar are warmly inviting. Inside the foyer has deep red walls, and provides space for the Town Council counter and theatre box office. The auditorium seats 170 on a retractable rake, giving the performance space great flexibility. Unusually the central aisle is on a diagonal, allowing performers to face audience in seats rather than a central gap. The back wall and seating are in shades of red, and the balcony, which provides dedicated wheelchair space, is fronted with simple panels of spruce. The performance area is simple, flat-floored with blackout drapes. Backstage has a crossover corridor and two dressing rooms. Behind this a workshop area, whose doors open onto a covered outdoor space, used to provide cover for market stalls and also an external performance space.
