Details
Designed by Sir John Burnet, the Alhambra opened in 1910 on the corner of Wellington Street and Waterloo Street (the site is now an office block, retaining the name as Alhambra House). An early example of the Modern Movement, the building was of red brick topped by prominent corner 'chatri' towers with panels of white-glazed tiles at their base, and further panels of white tiling above the main entrance. The auditorium was considered one of the largest in Britain, seating around 2,450, with additional space for 300 standing. Sparingly decorated in Louis XVI style. From 1954 the Alhambra became the flagship theatre of the Howard & Wyndham circuit. Closed in 1969, the site was cleared in 1971 and replaced by an office block, 'Alhambra House'.
