Details

Situated in the centre of historic Conwy, by the Quay, the Civic Hall building was constructed in the nineteenth century, in red stone with Bath stone dressings. Following a fire, it was rebuilt, including a 240-seat theatre. The building also houses Conwy Library, an art exhibition space and other front of house facilities and meeting spaces. A report commissioned by the Council in 2007 suggested that the Hall had reached the end of its working life in its current configuration. However the Hall continued in use, managed by the Council, but by 2010, funding cuts led to announcement of plans to close in March 2011. Enthusiastic campaigning by the user groups (co-ordinated as CCHUG, the Conwy Civic Hall User Groups) encouraged the Council to commit to keeping the Hall open into 2012. The group continues to campaign, and has now formed a Community Interest Company - Ciwb Conwy Cube - in order to apply for grant funding to run the Hall. A local developer was hoping to convert the hall to a restaurant, but has temporarily stepped back to allow Ciwb Conwy Cube (or any other community group) to come forward with a viable business plan to maintain theatre use for the future.
