Details
Opened in 1883, with a central hall with lantern roof and promenades. The ‘orchestra’ was described as being ‘adapted for the requirements of drama’. The Pavilion is part of a large complex, the theatre itself being on first floor level over a permanent Peak Mines Historical Society exhibition (former pump room). It is flat floored, about 23.5m (77ft) long and 13.5m (44ft) wide. The lower parts of iron arches are still visible but modern tile linings now conceal the upper parts of the original curved ceiling. The proscenium wall is covered with black metal cladding. The main external elevation is in modest classical style in two storeys, the centre with a melon dome (‘Unimaginative and not too costly spa architecture’, says Pevsner, dismissively). The Pavilion is now used for discos and occasional shows. With all its present weaknesses and low-key uses, it is the only venue for live entertainment within a wide area and could fulfil a genuine need.
