Details

Built in 1913, the Oxford Hippodrome was of brick with Matlock stone dressings. It had a single balcony and no fly tower. In 1920 the New Hippodrome (a cinéariety house) was built at 90 degrees to and at the rear. Shortly after the interior of the Oxford was dismantled, with the shell becoming the entrance to the New. The New was later sub-divided horizontally and became a two screen cinema. The lower space subsequently became a bingo hall and is now a nightclub. The remains of the Oxford are still in use as the entrance to the rear auditorium, and although much altered from its original internal form, the space below the stage (now a storage area) is still traceable.
