Details

Opened about 1883 in conjunction with the Steam Clock Tavern. Little information is known of this hall as it did not advertise in the local press. About 1894 became the Ladywood Palace and first appears in Kelly’s Directories in that year. In April 1910 it opened as the Ladywood Picture Palace, the newspaper advertisement announcing the venue as the ‘Late Steam Clock’ as opposed to the Ladywood Palace. Closed in 1914 on opening of another nearby cinema in Ledsham Street.

  • Unreliable anecdotes
Some references give 1895 for this property probably because it first appears in the 1895 Kelly’s directory but as this volume was published in December 1894 the earlier date should be favoured. Price in ‘Birmingham Theatres, Concert & Music Halls’ gives the date to the cinema as June 1910 but this is wrong.
