Details
One of the earliest atmospheric designs in the UK, in Mediterranean style, the auditorium was given the romantic appeal of an Italian courtyard. As in the Walthamstow Granada design, the façe has a central entrance bay, with high arched window above (and in this case a very high, almost Gothic apex) and side bays at either side in Italian style with balconied windows and shops at ground floor level. The theatre was fully equipped with stage facilities and dressing rooms; cafénd bar areas. Fire in 1944 closed the building for three months, after which it was refurbished. It was tripled in 1974, ending stage use.
