  • Description
Black and white postcard showing the façades of the London Pavilion and The Criterion within a streetscape of Piccadilly Circus in London. The image looks towards Haymarket from the west side of the circus, with the London Pavilion next door to a restaurant on the left hand side of the postcard, and The Criterion dominating the right. The building that encompasses the London Pavilion and the restaurant is symmetrical, with columns rising up from a first floor balcony to a central pediment with ‘The London Pavilion’ appearing on its face. An iron canopy juts out from one doorway underneath the balcony. Advertising signage is also visible at street-level. The Criterion appears to have a darker surface than the London Pavilion, with the principal part of the building on three storeys. The central bay has an iron canopy covering the main entrance, and THE CRITERION in tablature towards the top. This is flanked by two identical bays with alternative entrances at their base rising to pediments at the top. Set back from the main part of the building, the roof of the theatre continues but is largely out of shot. Advertising signage is visible at street-level.
