Streetscape showing The Criterion, London, circa 1920
  • Description
Black and white postcard showing the façade and part of a sidewall of The Criterion within a streetscape of Piccadilly Circus in London. The image looks towards Piccadilly, with the Duke of York’s Column and Victoria Tower in the background to the right. The Criterion dominates the left hand side of the postcard. A canopy advertising the name of the theatre is visible, but most of the ground floor and its arched main entrance are masked by the drinking fountain. It is made up of three bays with ‘The Criterion’ appearing in tablature towards the top, along the central bay, and also along the exposed sidewall. The two identical outer bays rise up to pediments, and then to an attic set back from the rest of the building.
