Details

Prior to 1830 the Waterloo Chamber was an interior courtyard. It was then floored and roofed to form a gallery in which to display portraits. It was never converted to a theatre in such a thoroughgoing way as Hampton Court Great Hall, but has been regularly fitted up since 1891 when the chamber saw the Savoy production of The Gondoliers. In later years, the Royal audience was seated in a railed dais, and the orchestra played from the side on their left. The tradition continues, and the chamber is still occasionally open to the public for theatre performance.
