Details

The Doric was built about 1928 as a cinéariety with more than 1000 seats. It has an unusual neo-Georgian front; brick with stucco dressings, parapet with a deep, simply moulded cornice. Semi-circular arched windows on first floor. A boldly projecting semi-circular bay is set well off-centre, containing the entrance in a recessed colonnade with coupled Doric columns. Other elevations are plain brick. Low fly tower. Internally, an inserted floor divides the Cabaret Club on the ground floor from the night club above. The stage, originally about 9.14m (30ft) deep with a 9.14m (30ft) proscenium, has also been subdivided horizontally. It seems to have been used for variety and pantomimes but was a cinema exclusively by the 1950s.
