Details

Important as a relic of an early theatre of which only the brick shell is (largely) original together with certain features in the cellar. The building presents a gabled front to the street. The two first floor windows, however, are now bricked up and below there is a conventional shop front with a central entrance in place of the original two arched doorways. There is a central coat of arms above the windows. The fretted barge boards would seem to be of mid nineteenth century date. Internally, there are no surviving traces of a theatre connection although beneath the ground floor - inserted, apparently, in 1855 - there are many indications of the original pit and stage layout suggesting, in the opinion of Richard Leacroft, a marked similarity with the theatre at Richmond, Yorkshire.
