Details

Totally unnoticeable as a theatre from the front, consisting of a pair of doors in the centre of a terrace. The rear is more easily identifiable with three original arched windows and a very tall door. A balcony on cast iron pillars ran around three sides of the room and it would seem that the theatre itself was at ground and first floor levels. A near contemporary of the Alexandra Music Hall Scarborough but on a smaller, less impressive scale. Now converted to shops and flats/offices it was not possible to view inside but it is believed to have retained at least some of the iron columns, and therefore the form of the Music Hall may still be discernible. In use until at least March 1887, it may well have closed when the Queen’s Theatre (now demolished) in Adelaide Street opened at the end of that year. It has been used, before its most recent conversion, as a furniture repository which survived until around 1979 with the hall supposedly more or less intact.
