Brunton Theatre

2961

The Brunton Theatre, opened in 1971, is part of the civic centre. As a result of a successful Lottery bid a programme of major improvements was undertaken in 1996, the theatre reopening in 1997.

The theatre has an interesting hexagonal plan with conjoined rectangles, giving generous wing space to the corner stage. Originally it had no flytower but one was built in 1997 with twenty four counterweight bars. A restaurant was also added at this time, and toilet and box office provision were both improved. Externally, its concrete facings present a simple, workmanlike geometry. The auditorium has three blocks of raked seating accessed by stairs on either side. Wheelchair access has been provided. The restaurant features decorative glasswork by Deborah Campbell.
