Theatr Colwyn
Early use was as a minstrel or concert party hall, now a producing theatre. Built in red brick with the principal façade on the Abergele Road, the entrance to the theatre lobby takes up most of the width of the narrow central bay of this façade, sheltered by a small glazed modern canopy. Above,at first floor level is a large central window beneath a gable in the centre of which is a small panel of decorative brick in which the words PUBLIC HALL appear in relief. The two broader, outer bays each contain at ground floor level what appears to have been a shop front beneath a shallow arch.
The auditorium is raked with no balcony. There is a shallow, arched ceiling. The upper border of the proscenium is curved. Flying height is limited to 4.27m (14ft) and cloths are either rolled or tumbled. Wing space is severely restricted by the passage beneath the stage of as many as four staircases, the bulkheads above them taking up a great deal of space. The two downstage sets of stairs lead to emergency exits: the two upstage sets to sub-stage dressing rooms.
A projection box was inserted at the rear of the auditorium in 2000 resulting in the loss of 46 seats and reducing the capacity to under 400.
