Theatres Trust responds to the government’s energy plans

We welcome the news that the government has placed a cap on energy costs for businesses for six months. However, it is vital that support continues beyond this point.

Theatres Trust Director Jon Morgan responds:

“We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement today of an energy cost cap for businesses over the next six months at the same price per unit that households will pay under the government's new plans. It is vital that support continues beyond this initial period and we also welcome the proposal for further targeted interventions to vulnerable hospitality businesses to be drawn up over the next three months. Theatres across the UK were facing increases in energy costs of more than 500% in some cases and without this intervention and the proposed further support there would undoubtedly be severe cutbacks in staffing and activity and in some cases permanent closure of theatres. Following the unprecedented investment in protecting theatres during Covid through the Culture Recovery Fund, these further interventions will help ensure our theatres continue to support their communities as they recover post-Covid.“
