King’s Theatre redevelopment project goes ahead

Theatres Trust welcomes the news that capital works will commence at the Edinburgh theatre thanks to increased funding from City of Edinburgh Council and Scottish Government.

Capital Theatres, the organisation that runs the Category A listed King’s Theatre has secured additional funding from City of Edinburgh Council and Scottish Government, which will enable the planned transformation project to commence.

Increased costs due to global events impacting the supply chain, inflation, and the complex nature of the work, had put the essential project at risk, threatening the future of the historic theatre.

Theatres Trust has provided ongoing support to Capital Theatres around the project, which includes improvements to the historic fabric to bring it in line with current regulations, essential plant and machinery upgrades, and improvements to access and front-of-house space to meet modern audience and artists’ expectations. Our support included convening an advisory review to appraise the pre-planning design proposals in 2019 with recommendations from the review taken forward in the subsequent proposals.

Theatres Trust Director Jon Morgan says “Congratulations to Capital Theatres for securing this funding with credit due to City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Government for recognising the importance of investing in cultural buildings. This is hugely welcome news, ensuring that an important theatre can continue to serve its audiences for many more years to come.”
