Highland Council unveils £12m spending cuts partly on leisure
5th February 2010
Councilors in the Highlands are being asked to vote for a package of cuts worth £12m in the next financial year. Finance chiefs have also warned that the savings will have to be much more severe in the years to come. In subsequent years, grants to Inverness Leisure, who run the city’s acquadome, the Eden Court Theatre and a range of Gaelic organisations will be cut.
The authority has also unveiled plans for so-called Citizen Panels, to be made up of 2,000 members of the public, who will act as “sounding boards” on a range of issues, including spending plans. Councillor David Alston described the budget situation facing the authority as “extreme”.
