It's your chance to name Llanelli's new theatre complex

16th June 2010

Llanelli residents being asked to help come up with a name for the town’s new theatre and arts complex. A public consultation is being launched to help find the best name for the yet-to-be-built £14.6 million cultural hub, which is designed to help breathe new life into the town.

Up to now, the scheme has been known as The Works or The Works 2 after a previous proposal for the Old Castle Works site, which fell through when a Lottery bid fell at the final hurdle.

Carmarthenshire Theatres manager Carwyn Matera– Rogers said: “The name and logo is vital and, as we are already putting our programme together for autumn 2012, it is crucial we come up with the right brand name as soon as possible.

“All we need are two or three brilliant suggestions that will stand out from the rest.”

The scheme involves a new-build theatre and creative centre on the site of the former Stepney Hotel and the renovation of the Grade II listed Zion Chapel and neighbouring Old School, which will house social enterprises, education and businesses in the performing arts field.

It promises to create 35 full-time jobs when it opens in July 2012, and around 120 during the construction phase, due to start in October.

It is hoped it will attract more than 50,000 visitors annually, boost the local economy by around £1 million a year and play a major role in community life.

The naming process will begin on Monday at 5.30pm at a free marketing and branding workshop taking place at Theatr Elli.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

Carmarthenshire Council head of leisure and sport Ian Jones said: “Naming and branding Carmarthenshire and Llanelli’s new theatre, arts and social enterprise centre is one of the most important elements in our build-up to the grand opening in 2012.

“The name needs to be unique and needs to convey what the project means at a local, national and international level.”

A short-list of names will go out for public vote across Carmarthenshire and prizes will be awarded for best ideas. The new name and logo will be launched in October 2010.
