Westminster Theatre Decision welcomed by The Theatres Trust
18th May 2009
Westminster City Council’s decision to grant planning permission for a new theatre in Palace Street represents an important milestone for theatres in the West End and the country.
In welcoming the Planning Committee’s decision, Mhora Samuel, The Theatres Trust’s Director said,
‘As well as delivering the first purpose built new theatre in the West End for decades, its Section 106 Agreement safeguards future use of the venue as a theatre. As the National Advisory Public Body for Theatres and a statutory consultee on theatre planning applications our advice to the Council was to accept this latest proposal whilst conditioning it to ensure it always remains a theatre. We’ve been waiting for over 5 years to see a scheme that works so I’m delighted that the plans received approval. It’s a good scheme and deserves support.’
The Theatres Trust now looks forward to working with the new theatre operator, London Aloft and developers, Yolanda Ltd on bringing the theatre to life.
