£3 million arts prize for Edinburgh

Anonymous donors have put up the £3M prize to fund a new capital project of exceptional merit. The successful project will demonstrate a sound artistic value, robust financial plan, architectural excellence, and establishment of need.

Marlowe theatre redevelopment gets the green light

Canterbury council’s development control committee has now approved the £25.2 million plans for a 1,200-seat auditorium at the Marlowe Theatre and a second 150-seat performance space. The plans went through on an 11 for and two against vote.

Aberdare Little Theatre faces uncertain future

One of Aberdare’s most historic buildings is facing demolition to make way for a housing development. The theatre’s trustees sought outline planning permission which was granted last week to develop the sit, which has been unoccupied since the company’s last production in February 2007.

Royal Opera House project lines up Manchester city centre sites

Sites in Manchester city centre are being actively considered for the £250m project to set up a northern outpost of the Royal Opera House. Land would be redeveloped as the key anchor to a “Cultural Quarter” involving the Cornerhouse, the Dancehouse Theatre and the nearby Palace Theatre.

Urgent repairs on Derby Hippodrome commence

17th August 2008

Derby City Council is carrying out the work on the disused Grade II listed Derby Hippodrome. The council gave notice to the theatre owner, Christopher Anthony, that he would have to foot the bill for the £5,000 cost of repairs that now include preserving the Green Lane elevation and the remaining roof structure.

Oxford Playhouse celebrates 70th anniversary

The Playhouse, the last regional theatre to be built before the Second World War, opened its doors on October 20, 1938. To mark the anniversary – as well as the departure of Tish Francis, who has run the theatre for the past 18 years – a week-long programme of events is being organised.

£12m upgrade casts doubt on future of main Edinburgh Fringe venue

The biggest venue on the Fringe may be out of action for two festivals because of a £12 million overhaul, it emerged yesterday. Edinburgh city council plans to press ahead with its controversial plans for the Assembly Rooms, and dismissed claims the project will force producers to quit the building.

Guildford Theatre takes funding fight to Westminster

Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud theatre bosses teamed up with local MPs last week to take their fight against funding cuts to Westminster following a drop in grant money of just under £500,000.

The Savoy Theatre, Monmouth is on the brink of closure, Unless much needed funding and resource is found, a decision on the current use of the theatre will have to be made in the near future, say informed sources.

Darlington Civic Theatre listed Grade II

15th August 2008

The Secretary of State, after consulting English Heritage, has decided to list Darlington Civic Theatre at Grade II. The Theatres Trust supported the application for listing as the Civic Theatre is an interesting early example of a variety theatre which has been preserved in its original form despite later additional structures being added.
