Conference 16: Protecting Theatres
Tuesday 21 June 2016
Conference 16: Protecting Theatres will take place at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane, and will be chaired by Mark Shenton.
The Conference 16: Protecting Theatres Report is available now.
In 2016 we wanted to take the opportunity to look at the state of the nation’s theatres – across London, England, Scotland and Wales – and consider how best to protect theatres for the next 40 years and secure a healthy and accessible theatre scene.
We took a look at the big picture – past and present influences on theatre architecture and design, and the provision of existing and new theatres in response to city and government devolution, changing demographics, housing delivery and community and audience demand.
And we put this in the context of investment in new venues at the heart of major commercial and residential development and the impact of these initiatives on existing theatres. What interventions and protections do historic, post war and new theatres need today if we are not to lose them tomorrow?
As well as looking to what kinds of theatres we need to be building, how easy should we be making it for existing buildings to adapt and change to accommodate the increasing popularity of digital distribution of live theatre performances, the need for stage to accommodate heavier loads and the next generation of drama, dance, opera and musical producers, theatre makers and emerging artists?
