Review of tiers announced

Theatres Trust responds to the review of tiers as some theatres move into Tier 2 but more move into Tier 3 from Saturday 19 December.

Theatres Trust Director Jon Morgan responds:

"It is disappointing but unsurprising news for both theatres and audiences hoping for some much needed seasonal joy that more areas in the south, east and south east of England such as Peterborough and Portsmouth will join London in moving into Tier 3 and that cities including Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham, will not have the reprieve they were hoping for.

Having invested huge amounts of money and effort in both making their venues Covid safe and rehearsing productions, theatres in these areas will now be unable to recoup some of the losses of 2020 and provide vital employment for some of the sector’s valued freelance workers.

Alongside this it will be a welcome relief for theatres in Bristol and North Somerset that they will be moving into Tier 2. Hopefully this will mean that pantos and other shows will be able to go ahead, giving theatres, performers and audiences alike in those areas a much needed boost at the end of a difficult year."
