Birmingham Hippodrome aims to become international dance centre
18th August 2009
Birmingham Hippodrome, along with long-standing resident companies the Birmingham Royal Ballet and DanceXchange, is laying plans to become an international centre for dance. The three organisations currently run the International Dance Festival Birmingham and the scheme would enable the work of the festival to expand.
The venue is currently undertaking a feasibility study to establish the various options for such a project and the cost of each one – which, at most, could amount to “tens of millions of pounds”. One possibility would be for it to acquire nearby buildings to create more working space, while another option would be to create a public square outside the building where performances could be presented.
The feasibility study will be completed in the next six months, which will enable the venue to outline a clearer plan for the venture.
