Swansea Council buys Palace Theatre

Swansea Council has announced it will buy the Grade II listed Swansea Palace Theatre to develop community, office and retail space inside.

Swansea Palace has been on our Theatres at Risk register since the list was first published in 2006. Over this time Swansea Council has shown enormous support for the building and has been active in its protection.

We know from a previous feasibility study that it is unlikely that re-opening the Palace for theatre use will be viable. However, Theatres Trust would be generally supportive of a sensitive mixed-use regeneration scheme that looks to preserve the main body of the auditorium for community use.

We remain hopeful that news of the council’s ownership proves to be both a fresh and positive start for the building and we look forward to working with the council on this in the forthcoming months.
