Birmingham REP assesses brand communications strategy

The Birmingham Repertory Theatre (The REP) has appointed Birmingham’s ORB Creative as branding consultants, tasking them with helping to sustain the theatre’s identity throughout the construction of the new joint Library of Birmingham/REP development.

Cheers from gallery as plan to turn theatre into a car park is voted out

Cheers and shouts of “thank-you” echoed around the Council House last night after plans to demolish part of the former Hippodrome Theatre in Derby were thrown out. Every member of Derby City Council’s planning control committee spoke out against a proposal to demolish the building, which dates from 1914, and replace it with a multi-storey car park.

Portsmouth New Theatre Royal in for double accolade

The Portsmouth Festivities and New Theatre Royal have been nominated for honours in the 2010 Arts & Business Awards. The NTR’s redevelopment project with the University of Portsmouth is in line for the Sustained Partnership Award, and the theatre’s former chairman, university vice-chancellor Professor John Craven, has been nominated as Board Member of the Year.

Turning point for Derby Hippodrome

Campaigners fighting a two-year battle to save Derby Hippodrome have won a key victory after council officers recommended the local authority reject developer Christopher Anthony’s application to demolish part of the venue. Members of Derby City Council planning control committee will decide today (July 8) whether to accept their experts’ advice.

Leicester's flagship theatre Curve to close down for series of repair works

Leicester’s flagship £61 million theatre is to be closed for up to six weeks this summer for maintenance and improvement work to be carried out. Bosses at Curve, in Rutland Street, have decided to take a summer break for the first time since it opened in November 2008.

The show goes on at Dylan Thomas Theatre after closure mix-up

The Dylan Thomas Theatre is open for business as usual, its bosses have said. The team behind the theatre in the city’s marina has issued the message to let people know the venue is continuing to operate as normal, after being contacted by people who believed its days were numbered.

Rear extension and extensive internal works to the Royal National Theatre

The London Borough of Lambeth has consulted The Theatres Trust on an application for extensive works to the Royal National Theatre including: new entrance lobby and bookshop; reconfiguration of foyers; new education centre and refurbished Cottesloe auditorium; relocation of existing service yard; new catering and cafe areas; new four-storey rear extension providing workshop space.

New stage for Byre Theatre funding?

The future may be looking up for a well-known St Andrews landmark. Talks between the Byre Theatre and Creative Scotland – the new arts body which has replaced the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) and Scottish Screen – began last week in a bid to forge a new relationship.
