Morecambe Winter Gardens receives Coastal Communities funding

We are delighted that Morecambe Winter Gardens has received funding through the latest round of the Coastal Communities Fund.

The grant of £96,550 will pay for the replacement of the heating system, which will improve the experience of audiences. It is a vital step towards expanding the programme and the long-term sustainability of the theatre.

Morecambe Winter Gardens has been on our Theatres at Risk Register since its inception in 2004 and is a landmark building, architecturally striking and a rare survivor of its type.

It is situated in the heart of Morecambe, which like many coastal towns, has suffered from economic decline and a lack of investment in recent years. The town is showing signs of revival as the proposed location of Eden Project North. More than ever theatres are a key part of what makes a place special, providing places for people to gather, creating a sense of local identify and distinctiveness and with the right support, the Winter Gardens can certainly play a part in Morecambe’s future prosperity.

Theatres Trust will continue to work with Morecambe Winter Gardens to identify the repairs and improvements required to secure the building and develop a governance model that will continue to grow the building as an accessible and animated cultural asset for the town.

Details of all the projects funded in this round of the Coastal Communities Fund can be found on the Government website.
