EH’s National Monuments Record online archive goes live

From now on the public will have online access to more than a million historical photographs and documents relating to England’s historic buildings and archaeological sites, held by the National Monuments Record (NMR), English Heritage’s public archive.

Redcar seafront showpiece plans unveiled on site of ex Palace

Two iconic buildings are being planned as part of a massive £40m improvement project for Redcar seafront. An 80ft high “vertical pier” is planned along with The Hub – a £10.8m showpiece base for the area’s creative industries. The Hub aims to be a focal point for creative and digital industries in the Tees Valley. It will provide a new base for up-and-coming firms to flourish on the site of the former Palace Theatre.

£200m sell-off of council property could help buy new theatre for Chester

A massive sale of council property worth £200m could help pay for a new theatre for Chester, says council leader Mike Jones. Assets including 32 retail units and 5,000 acres of farmland will be auctioned off by Cheshire West and Chester Council to fund road repairs and improve leisure and sports facilities by 2020, in a bid to restore Victorian-style civic pride to the city.

New publication: Acting With Confidence Scotland's Theatre Architecture

Historic Scotland with the help of The Theatres Trust have published a new book on Scotlands theatres architecture. In 2008/09 Historic Scotland undertook a thematic study of Scotland’s hstoric theatre buildings. This book celebrates the architects and styles of Scottish theatres.

Curtain up on new £9m Greenock theatre

27th May 2010

The bid to raise £9 million for a spectacular new Clyde waterfront theatre has been reached after it was given a Big Lottery Fund grant of £378,716. The centre will be in a prime location on the former dockyard site, adjacent to the historic Georgian Customhouse.

Sir Paul McCartney stops Old Vic’s roof from falling in

Sir Paul McCartney is to raise the roof in a bid to save the roof of the Old Vic at the first of a new and glamorous series of annual fundraisers. The former Beatle has come to the rescue of Kevin Spacey as the Hollywood star battles to keep the 192-year-old theatre from crumbling. The two men have become friends since Spacey settled in London to run the venue.

Funding fears increase as ACE is told to cut £19m

Theatres and arts centres across the country are under threat of immediate cuts to their subsidies after Arts Council England was ordered to make £19 million of savings to its 2010/11 budget, with ACE warning it cannot guarantee funded organisations will be protected.
