Teenagers who have helped shape the rebirth of an East Oxford theatre offered an exclusive sneak preview behind the scenes. Pegasus Theatre, in Magdalen Road, is in the final stages of a £7.4m revamp and today the Government’s Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw saw how building work was progressing.

Pulford to step down as head of SOLT/TMA

Richard Pulford is to retire as chief executive of the Society of London Theatre and the Theatrical Management Association at the end of this year. Pulford has served as joint chief executive for the two organisations since 2001, when he succeeded Rupert Rhymes.
Revamped £25m Marlowe theatre takes shape

The New Marlowe Theatre promises to be a major arts venue for the South East. It is currently undergoing a £25.6m redevelopment and is on schedule to be completed by autumn next year. Work first started a year ago, with the city council promising it will bring significant rewards for the area. It will have a 1,200-seat auditorium and a second 150-seat performance area.
Peterborough City Council transfers culture, leisure, and sports to charitable trust

Peterborough City Council has transferred its culture, leisure and sports into a charitable trust with a budget approaching £5m a year. Councillors voted this week to pass non-statutory services to the new Peterborough Cultural and Leisure Trust from 1 May. The council will contribute £4.51m to the trust’s proposed £4.78m budget, although this amount is only guaranteed for a year.

£8m plan to turn Great Yarmouth chapel into ‘landmark’ theatre

A Grade I-listed former chapel in Great Yarmouth is to be converted into a performance venue, under £8 million redevelopment plans submitted to the local council. A planning application has been submitted to Great Yarmouth Borough Council for the building, which was de-consecrated in 1959 and which had been used as a theatre for more than 20 years until 2006, when structural decay forced it to close.

The Grade II listed art deco building is on the verge of a highly anticipated transformation into an arts centre with an ambitious £18million scheme including a new theatre, studio space, bars and housing.

Leeds City Varieties makeover well underway

Work is now well underway on a project to restore the world-famous Leeds City Varieties back to its former glory. The first phase of the £9.2m renovation and restoration of the building on Swan Street which is one of the oldest surviving Victorian-era music halls in the UK began at the start of the year. Contractors BAM Construction are now hard at work carrying out the major project which will see the building returned as much as possible to how it looked in the late 19th century.
