Chester fire crews called to blaze at the old Gateway Theatre building

Girefighters have been tackling a small blaze at the old Gateway Theatre building in Chester. Crews discovered a security door had been set alight when they arrived at the scene between 1-1.30pm today (Thursday, April 22).

Former Gateway Theatre building in Chester still in Tip Top condition

The old Chester Gateway Theatre has now been home to Tip Top Productions for three years. Rebranded as The Forum Studio Theatre, during that time they have opened the doors to more than 50 productions, some amateur and some professional. Using the studio theatre, the group has been working on some impressive improvements to the interior of the building.
Birmingham’s Mac is back after two-year revamp

The refurbished Midland Arts Centre (Mac) in Birmingham will open its doors at the beginning of May after a two-year renovation period. The Mac first opened back in 1962 but was shut in April 2008 after falling into a state of disrepair, with limited access requiring it be brought up to modern standards.
Buchanan’s End of the Pier Productions takes over management of London’s Arts Theatre

Central London’s Arts Theatre has undergone a change of management and a restructuring, after Bronia Buchanan’s End of the Pier Productions was brought in to take over programming at the struggling venue. The 350-seat theatre, best known for having hosted the London premiere of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, is currently leased by Kingdom Entertainment Group and Wimpole Theatre.
Mayoral candidate’s producing house plans for Hackney Empire branded ‘naive’

A candidate running to become the Mayor of Hackney in next month’s local elections has said he would turn Hackney Empire into a producing venue if he was voted in. Conservative mayoral candidate Andrew Boff said he would give the historic London venue “a new direction by turning it into a producing theatre” and making it a “centre of excellence” for variety theatre.

Newcastle’s Theatre Royal to receive £4.8m renovation loan

Newcastle City Council is expected to sign off on a £4.8 million loan to the city’s Theatre Royal. The funds are part of the council’s capital programme and will be used to restore the auditorium, which was designed by theatre architect Frank Matcham. The venue will pay off the loan over ten years.
Andrew Lloyd Webber angers Westminster Council with Adelphi paint job

Black paint added to the outside of one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End theatres for his new musical Love Never Dies is “unacceptable” according to Westminster Council planning officers. The black paint, which currently covers the fa?ßade of the Grade II-listed Adelphi Theatre on the Strand, is the subject of a review by Westminster Council’s planning sub-committee.
Bedford Civic Theatre closure - the debate

Plans to close Bedford Civic Theatre to save £1million a year would be “devastating”, according to some members of the Bedford arts community. But Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford, claims that his hand has been forced by a lack of interest in hiring the venue from promoters. More than 700 people have signed up to protest against the £700,000 proposals on the social networking site Facebook.
Demolition begins at Ayr’s Civic Theatre

The demolition of a much loved theatre has begun. Ayr’s Civic is being stripped bare by contractors, who moved in on Monday. The iconic theatre played host to a range of top shows during its heyday, including visits from Elvis Presley’s original guitarist Scotty Moore.
